Our Venue

We sail on Lake Dunmore in Brandon, VT – which is just over 20 minutes away from campus by car. Dunmore is nestled into the edge of the beautiful Green Mountain National Forrest and offers a closer and less crowded alternative to Lake Champlain.

Despite Dunmore’s smaller size and valley location, it averages over 14 knots of wind and we typically have consistent breeze until sundown. Winds are typically north-to-south, but occasionally clock around with Vermont’s lake-effect weather patterns. The vast majority of the lake is sail-able, with depths averaging 28 feet but measuring as great as 105 feet.

Old-Dunmore

A brief history of Lake Dunmore:

"Lake Dunmore is likely named after John Murray, the 4th Earl of Dunmore who served as the British governor of the Province of New York from 1770 to 1771. At the time, Vermont was still under the control of New York. Early in Vermont's history, a glass factory was established at Lake Dunmore to take advantage both of sand from the lakeshore and wood from the adjoining forest. The ventures (there were two of them) were short-lived, but remaining Lake Dunmore glass pieces are highly prized by collectors. By the early 1900s, there were several large resort hotels on the shores serviced by railroads that had been built to the area." -lakelubbers.com
